I was very intrigued when I saw an article advertising that Ringwood School were organising a ‘Fairwear Fashion Show’ as part of this years Ringwood Festival.

I would class myself as ‘green aware’ but I also liken myself to a ‘struggling vegetarian’ and concur to the line ’its not easy being green’.

I was all set to attend this fashion show and support the school but unfortunately there was a family crisis that I needed to attend to, (my cat had escaped again just as I was leaving the house, its a long story).

The theme of the show orchestrated by three very inspiring 'A level' students, was to raise awareness of local ‘green and ethical traders’ such as Timber, promote the concept of re-using fashion i.e. charity shops, promoting a new idea of ‘clothes swap parties’ and finally to raise awareness of global chains like People Tree who are a very successful ethical ‘Brand’.

I still feel that there is an out of date ‘idea’ that being green and ethical relates to hippies who don’t wear shoes and certainly not people who have “proper jobs”.

I do hope that the show was a great success and that lots of local people took the time to attend this event to find out more about ‘local fair trade’.

Events like this are critical to maintaining the Fair Trade awareness and inspire shop keepers and businesses in Ringwood to re-evaluate their stock!
