The Spinnaker Sailing Club has been running for 50 years so it is no surprise to know that they have gain considerable noteriety acros sailing circles. The RYA have even chosen the club as the “centre of excellence” for the sport in the South and the club is home to the Southampton University Sailing Club.

As well has having a variety of boats used for training beginners and social sailors, the club boasts a fleet of 6 matched team racing fireflys and 4 RS Fevas together with 2 racing Toppers and a Laser (with Full, Radial + 4.7 rigs).

Several national champions have come from Spinnaker Sailing Club over the years with many members becoming top in the countrys class fleets.

The club encourages members to race in the two weekly programmes as it adds fun to sailing, is good for improving sailing abilility and is all part of the joy of being a member of a great club. The results of the races are published with the race times and subsequent points awarded.

An Open Race was held on 20th June 2010 at the clubs base at Blashford Lakes where club members challenged sailors from other clubs including Emsworth, Ely and Burghfield. The overall winners, however, were two Spinnaker club members who managed to beat 11 other boats over 3 seperate races having very good race times.

On 11th July the Junior Summer Cup took place on the lake to include some 20 boats with a good mix of both boys and girls all hungry to show off their talents. Racing for younsters is great for improving their spacial awareness, sharpening their sailing techniques and improve their mental strength as they percervier in varying weather conditions.

The Spinnaker Sailing Club are competing in the Volvo Musto Optimist British National and Open Championship at Weymouth this week. Yesterday marked the two year point to the 2012 Olympics to the day which all yachting fans will be excited to hear. Ben Ainslie, 3 times olympic gold medalist, was at the venue talking to competitors and signing boats and all other sailing equipement.  Ben received training from the Spinnaker Club.
